Capturing bacteria that eat and breathe electricity

Last August, Abdelrhman Mohamed found himself hiking deep into the wilderness of Yellowstone National Park.

Unlike thousands of tourists who trek to admire the park’s iconic geysers and hot springs every year, the WSU graduate student was traveling with a team of scientists to hunt for life within them.

After a strenuous seven mile walk through scenic, isolated paths in the Heart Lake Geyser Basin area, the team found four pristine pools of hot water. They carefully left a few electrodes inserted into the edge of the water, hoping to coax little‑known creatures out of hiding — bacteria that can eat and breathe electricity.

After 32 days, the team returned to the hot springs to collect the submerged electrodes. Working under the supervision of Haluk Beyenal, Paul Hohenschuh Distinguished Professor in the Gene and Linda Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering, Mohamed and postdoctoral researcher Phuc Ha analyzed the electrodes.

Voila! They had succeeded in capturing their prey — heat‑loving bacteria that “breathe” electricity through the solid carbon surface of the electrodes.

Patients Experiment With Prescription Drugs To Fight Aging

Dr. Alan Green’s patients travel from around the country to his tiny practice in Queens, N.Y., lured by the prospect of longer lives.

Over the past two years, more than 200 patients have flocked to see Green after learning that two drugs he prescribes could possibly stave off aging. One 95-year-old was so intent on keeping her appointment that she asked her son to drive her from Maryland after a snowstorm had closed the schools.

Green is among a small but growing number of doctors who prescribe drugs “off-label” for their possible anti-aging effects. Metformin is typically prescribed for diabetes, and rapamycin prevents organ rejection after a transplant, but doctors can prescribe drugs off-label for other purposes — in this case, for “aging.”

Rapamycin’s anti-aging effects on animals and metformin’s on people with diabetes have encouraged Green and his patients to experiment with them as anti-aging remedies, even though there’s little evidence healthy people could benefit.

“Many of [my patients] have Ph.D.s,” said Green, who is 76 and has taken the drugs for three years. “They have read the research and think it’s worth a try.”

In fact, it’s easier for patients to experiment with the drugs — either legally off-label or illegally from a foreign supplier — than it is for researchers to launch clinical trials that would demonstrate they work in humans.

Melatonin and General Aging

Melatonin, a hormone primarily secreted by the pineal gland in the brain, is also produced in skin and hair cells.  Melatonin is more than just the “sleep hormone” — it regulates the circadian rhythm, which affects many metabolic and endocrine processes.

Melatonin, and the circadian rhythm more generally, plays a role in staving off aging. Melatonin levels decline as we age, and correspondingly circadian rhythms become less regular.[1][2][3]  Mice with mutations damaging their circadian rhythm have accelerated-aging syndromes, with obesity, diabetes, muscle loss, and shortened lifespans.[4][5][6] Supplementing melatonin in rodents (or administering extracts from the pineal gland[7], or grafts from fetal pineal glands[8]) has been found to extend lifespan[9][10], prolong fertility[11], reduce cancer incidence[12], reduce obesity and insulin resistance[13], and improve neurological recovery from brain injury.[14]  Melatonin and compounds that act along the same pathway have potential as aging-preventative drugs.

Melatonin administration also improves skin resistance to damage (such as from UV rays) and increases hair growth.

In both in-vitro skin culture experiments and human studies, administering melatonin prior to exposure to UV radiation increases cell survival and reduces oxidative damage.[15] Topical melatonin applied to skin 15 minutes prior to exposure to UV radiation completely prevented skin redness (erythema) in a small randomized double-blind study of human subjects.[16][17]

How to Optimize Your Melatonin Levels

Two common environmental “noise” factors that can make sleep elusive are light pollution and temperature. The following suggestions can improve your sleep hygiene and help you optimize your melatonin production. For a comprehensive sleep guide, please see my article 33 Secret’s to a Good Night’s Sleep.

  • Avoid watching TV or using your computer in the evening, at least an hour or so before going to bed. These devices emit blue light, which tricks your brain into thinking it’s still daytime. Normally your brain starts secreting melatonin between 9 and 10 pm, and these devices emit light that may stifle that process.
  • Make sure you get BRIGHT sun exposure regularly. Your pineal gland produces melatonin roughly in approximation to the contrast of bright sun exposure in the day and complete darkness at night. If you are in darkness all day long, it can’t appreciate he difference and will not optimize your melatonin production.
  • Sleep in complete darkness, or as close to it as possible. Even the slightest bit of light in your bedroom can disrupt your biological clock and your pineal gland’s melatonin production. Even the tiniest glow from your clock radio could be interfering with your sleep, so cover your radio up at night or get rid of it altogether. Move all electrical devices at least three feet away from your bed. You may want to cover your windows with drapes or blackout shades.
  • Install a low-wattage yellow, orange or red light bulb if you need a source of light for navigation at night. Light in these bandwidths does not shut down melatonin production in the way that white and blue bandwidth light does. Salt lamps are handy for this purpose.
  • Keep the temperature in your bedroom no higher than 70 degrees F. Many people keep their homes too warm (particularly their upstairs bedrooms). Studies show that the optimal room temperature for sleep is between 60 to 68 degrees.
  • Take a hot bath 90 to 120 minutes before bedtime. This increases your core body temperature, and when you get out of the bath it abruptly drops, signaling your body that you are ready to sleep.
  • Avoid using loud alarm clocks. Being jolted awake each morning can be very stressful. If you are regularly getting enough sleep, you might not even need an alarm.
  • Get some sun in the morning, if possible. Your circadian system needs bright light to reset itself. Ten to 15 minutes of morning sunlight will send a strong message to your internal clock that day has arrived, making it less likely to be confused by weaker light signals during the night. More sunlight exposure is required as you age.
  • Be mindful of electromagnetic fields in your bedroom. EMFs can disrupt your pineal gland and its melatonin production, and may have other negative biological effects as well. A gauss meter is required if you want to measure EMF levels in various areas of your home.

Scientists are growing increasingly concerned over the potential health risks of wireless technologies which, they say, national and international regulations ‘fail’ to limit.

And new technologies are arriving every day – and customers can’t buy them fast enough.

Apple’s wireless AirPods, for example, ‘communicate with one another using a magnetic induction field, a variable magnetic field [one] sends through your brain to communicate with the other,’ explains Dr Joel Moskowitz.

Dr Moskowitz, a University of California, Berkeley community health professor who focuses on cell phone exposures, says there isn’t even research on what this could do to the brain yet, let alone regulations to limit the potential effects.

‘But I couldn’t imagine it’s all that great for you,’ he says.

Wireless technologies are simply outpacing both research and regulation – and it could have disastrous effects for our health.

A petition warning that microwave radiation from many popular wireless technologies may pose health risks has gathered 250 signatures.

While the scientific jury is still out on the whether or not particular devices an cause cancer, animal studies on the kind of radiofrequency radiation that they emit – which is used in Bluetooth, cellular and wifi transmissions – has suggested a link to cancer.

Does blue light speed blindness? Here are 3 things that may help prevent damage.

I recently read an article that stated blue light could speed blindness.  We all know that technology we look at emits blue light so how serious is this?

Problem

Blue light from digital devices and the sun transforms vital molecules in the eye’s retina into cell killers, according to optical chemistry research at The University of Toledo.

According to the article, blue light can not be reflected or blocked by the eye’s cornea which then damages the retina and can result in macular degeneration.  Macular degeneration is a disease that results in the death of photoreceptor cells in the retina and eventually results in blindness.  The blue light exposure generates poisonous chemical molecules in photoreceptor cells.

“Photoreceptor cells do not regenerate in the eye. When they’re dead, they’re dead for good.” – Kasun Ratnayake, a Ph.D.

Solutions

  1. Researches say that Vitamin E (alpha tocoferol) can help prevent these cells from dying but as we age the immune system is depressed and we lose the ability to fight against the attack by retinal and blue light.
  2. Protect your eyes from blue light by wearing sunglasses that can filter both UV and blue light outside.
  3. Avoid looking at your cell phones or tablets in the dark.

It’s very important that we pay attention to the positive and negative impacts technology can have on our social, physical and spiritual health.

2018 the rise of Avatars

Recently X-Prize launched the $10 million AVATAR challenge whose goal is to create:

(An) avatar system that will seamlessly transport human skills and experience to the exact location where and when they are needed.

I have been thinking a lot about Avatars the past few years and believe this is something that will truly benefit the world as a whole.

A.I. (artificial reality), robotics &  V.R. (virtual reality) are still in their early stages but we can leap ahead if we couple A.I., robotics & V.R. with human operators.

I believe there is a way to have a robot that could do the dishes, laundry and even cook, but it feels like we are still a long ways away from this happening based upon where we are with autonomous A.I. and robots.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Statistics graphic above, we spend an average of 1.25 – 2.15 hours per day on household activities alone.  That’s 40,000+ hours or 4.5 years of our lives we could spend doing things that we want to do.  I believe with the Avatars we can add 4.5 years (at least) to all of our lives and live healthier and happier. We could eat healthier meals because we don’t have to stress about all the work involved in preparing healthy meals.  We could spend more time with family, friends and helping others if we did not have to spend time maintaining our things.  For the first time in human history, we will be able to dedicate more time to people and less time to tasks!

How could we create a world like the one I am speaking about? As an entrepreneur and coder, I am dedicated to agile development, which to me is about building things with what we have and that work now and updating over time as technology advances.

It is entirely possible that today we can utilize people power from around the globe to control real Avatars that could do the laundry, dishes and even cook.  There is a lot of people power around the world not being utilized every second of the day.  If you look on sites like Task Rabbit, UpWork, and even Craigslist, you will see that there are thousands of skilled people around the world looking for work.

What if you had an Avatar that would work in your home and tap into this pool of underutilized human potential?  Imagine an avatar in your kitchen that when you wanted to eat you just told it what you wanted, for example, a turkey dinner, and then this request was sent to the cloud and people bid on the task and the winning bidder could then use the Avatar in your own kitchen to make the meal.

This would be revolutionary and I think this is why the X-Prize is such a great opportunity to make this happen.

I can see a world not too far in the future where the time we spend on things we don’t want to do is done by a remote person who wants to do them giving us more time to do what we want to do.

The natural progression of all this is that the Avatars would learn from all the tasks being performed by talented humans and eventually match and far surpass them. We will all have gourmet chefs, maids, butlers, personal assistants and heavy-lifters on demand, anytime.  Machines will do all the work!

Today, only the rich (or very creative) have dedicated chefs, maids, and butlers. In the future, everyone will!  We have seen this before in history where only the rich could eat any food they wanted, now we can (called buffets, even the richest kings would have been jealous about our modern buffets).  Only the rich could afford plumbing, electricity and now we all can. Only the rich had the luxury of relaxing and not worrying, soon we all will have that luxury.  I wonder…what will we worry about then?

Genesis Movie Premiere

This weekend my family and I went to my friends movie premiere for Genesis – Paradise Lost.

I have been following his work on the movie for over 5 years and I was hopeful that the movie would be amazing.  I was not disappointed! From the graphics and content to the music and cinematics, it was simply spectacular!

We drove 6 hours for the premiere booking a hotel for 2 nights making it another great adventure for our family.  This was the kids first movie in a real movie theater so they were so excited.  How amazing to see your first movie and that movie to be one created by someone you know AND to see the world premiere of that movie LOL!  Me, my wife and 4 kids all loved it.

I am so happy for Ralph Strean and everyone else who worked on the movie.

It is inspiring and well worth an academy award for the computer animation 🙂
